1/14: Color Theory for Photographers

There are three orders of colors. Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary. In RYB color, it’s Red, Yellow, and Blue as the primary. They are three pure colors of which all other colors are derived from. If you add two primary and get another color, it’ll be a secondary color. A tertiary is a mix between secondary and primary. Note the primary colors do not distract the eye from the subject. By using strong primary reds and blues, the subject is clear to the viewer. Strong secondary colors often add interest and can easily become a subject on their own. Tertiary colors are often used to create visual interest and make for other-worldly vibes. Hue simply is the shade or name of the color. Saturation is the amount of color, or its intensity. Luminance is the brightness of the color. complementary colors are the ones which sit completely opposite one another on the color wheel. Colors which sit next to each other on the color wheel and share similar colors are known as analogous colors.
